ADHD Counseling for Children
After first receiving an ADHD diagnosis for their child, many parents wonder where to even begin and how to best help their child be successful. They might already have a psychiatrist for medication management, but feel they need more. If you can relate, then you’ve come to the right place. We know that medication plus counseling has been proven to be the most effective form of treatment, but we also respect that many parents do not feel comfortable with their child taking ADHD medication. Regardless, we’re here to support you and your child no matter what. We will honor and respect any decision you make regarding medicating your child.
Our Approach to Child Counseling for ADHD
Often kids with ADHD have feel defeated. In fact, many children report feeling like they never get things right, or they are always in trouble. Sometimes they share that they feel like their teachers hate them. So, we begin counseling by helping your child boost their self-esteem and self-confidence. We believe that learning to love yourself and feel good is an important life skill.
We also help the family develop a system to help everyone thrive. Research shows that every relationship in the family is impacted when there is a person with ADHD in the home. So our therapists will work with you to create a sense of unity, calmness, and understanding. Together we will figure a discipline system, what works for your child and your family, and how to strengthen the relationships in your family (even the parent-parent relationship!). Sometimes, we even include siblings in counseling if we think it’s appropriate!
Coping skills and emotional regulation are important to learn at any age. But, they are especially important for anyone with ADHD. Many individuals with AD/HD have difficulty managing disappointments, struggle with transitions, and can even have anger outbursts. Through emotion coaching, cognitive behavioral therapy, and other therapeutic interventions, we help your child manage those big feelings!
It might feel like your child is never organized, procrastinates, or is hard to motivate. We recognize these are important skills to work on. And, we think that a parent shouldn’t have to feel the weight of all of this is on their shoulders. We will teach your child lots of skills to help them when they are overwhelmed. We also use psychoeducation to teach your child why how their procrastination actually increases their anxiety and help them put organizational systems in place to help them be successful.
ADHD and Relationships
Sometimes, relationships can suffer when one or both partners have ADHD. It might feel like your partner never listens, or they always misunderstand you. Maybe you wonder why they don’t ever seem to prioritize you or spending time with you. You love each other, but constantly are fighting over the same issues.
If you’re struggling with ADHD and relationship conflict, then you’ve come to the right place. Having a counselor who understands ADHD and affirms neurodiversity can make all the difference. We understand ADHD and relationship challenges. So, we can offer you interventions and tools to help the two of you connect and understand each other better.
