Part 2: My Daughter's Experience with LENS Neurofeedback
After sharing my own experience with LENS neurofeedback, I promised I'd tell you about my daughter's.
A few days after my first session, I picked her up from cooking camp and asked if she'd be willing to participate in a little experiment.
She immediately said yes.
When she saw all the wires, she became a little hesitant, but quickly relaxed when I explained that nothing goes into your body. The sensors simply stick to your skin, there's no electricity that you feel, and the treatment is completely painless.
From filling out her questionnaire to finishing the session, the entire appointment only took about ten minutes.
Because she's incredibly sensitive to just about everything, we decided to start conservatively with Body LENS on her feet.
I'm really glad we did.
She definitely noticed a difference.
Later that day she looked at me and said,
"I feel really happy today."
Now, to be fair...we were shopping at Lululemon, which is probably every preteen girl's happy place.
But I'll still take the win.
Over the next day or two, I noticed several other things.
She and her teenage brother didn't argue once.
If you know my family, you know that is almost as impressive as a scientific breakthrough. We are ridiculously competitive, especially during family game night.
She also slept for 16 hours that night.
When she woke up, she seemed calmer, less anxious, and more emotionally regulated than she had been in a while.
Can I say with certainty that every one of those changes came from LENS?
Of course not.
Life is complicated. Sleep, stress, hormones, excitement, and countless other factors influence how we feel from one day to the next.
But the timing certainly caught my attention, and the overall changes were meaningful enough that we wanted to continue.
Since then, she's been to two overnight camps and then traveled across Europe, complete with jet lag, disrupted routines, and plenty of excitement. Not surprisingly, I feel like many of those early changes have settled back toward her baseline.
That's actually one of the reasons I'm excited to continue.
Just like going to the gym once isn't enough to build lasting strength, nervous system regulation is often something we support over time. Our plan is to incorporate LENS into our family's wellness routine and see how things continue to evolve over the coming months.
As both a therapist and a mom, one of my favorite parts of this journey has been experiencing it alongside my own family. I never want to recommend something to clients that I wouldn't be willing to try myself.
We'll continue sharing our experiences, the research as it develops, and what we're learning along the way.
