August’s Position of the Month: Within Reach
WRITTEN BY KATIE MITCHELL, M.A., NCC, LPC, NCC
CERTIFIED SEX THERAPIST
August’s highlighted position of the month is the Within Reach. While guidelines for masks continue to change back and forth with the new COVID variants picking up speed, please keep healthy sex practices in mind - please remain cognizant to wash your hands (and use the restroom) before and after a sexual experience! If it helps you both to feel more comfortable, start your shared sexual experience by taking a shower together. As a reminder - a sexual experience will release Oxytocin and other beneficial endorphins, which will help you and your partner(s) feel bonded to one another and release stress/tension. As I always recommend, begin this experience by doing some light stretching together to help avoid injuries and/or muscle cramps that might arise during a sexual experience (FYI – muscle cramps/injuries are the most common sexual injuries).
Ideally, you and your partner would try out the Within Reach on a soft, well supported surface, such as a bed, sofa, or (soft) flooring. The penetrating partner will be the bottom support for this position. They will lean back, engaging their core muscles. The partner being penetrated will face and straddle their partner (their legs will go over the penetrating partner’s thighs), while also leaning back and engaging their core. In order to help support one another, both partners will hold each other at arm’s length. This touch can also be used by the penetrating partner to pull their partner closer into them. The partner being penetrated can work their glutes to help with thrusting and penetration.
Once penetration has occurred, the two of you will work together to create a thrusting pace that is pleasurable for both. Start out slowly and then increase movement as you both feel and express comfortability. For the penetrating partner, this position will work their lats and core. For the partner being penetrated, this position will work their lats, core, and glutes. It is recommended to try out this position for 1 to 5 minutes. If this is a new position for you and your partner, be conscious of foreplay and be sure to have lubrication on hand. Lubrication is always important for trying out a new position that is not routine for you both; plus, it’s a benefit to have it be a grab away, versus realizing you are out!
Here’s to carving out some time to try something new during August! More information for this specific position (including a visual image) can be found on page 252 of The Kama Sutra Workout, and this book can be purchased from Amazon here.
