4 Quick Steps to Instantly Improve your Mood
Everyone has days where everything seems negative. You might be in a “funk” and feel like you can’t snap out of it. Here are some tips to instantly improve your mood.
- Surround yourself with positivity. How many times do we feel down and then do things to stay down? For instance, after a break-up many people watch sad romance movies, or listen to music that makes them sad. Try a positive journal for a week. Write down every single thing and person that you are thankful for that day. You will be amazed what focusing on the positive can do for your mood.
- Exercise! When you are down the last thing that you want to do is exercise. However, it can be the best boost for your mind, body, and energy! Not only does exercise release endorphins that will help make you feel better, it also accomplishes a goal. Sometimes there is no better feeling than setting a goal and accomplishing it. Put on those running shoes and start moving!
- Share your story. As a therapist, I often hear clients tell me they feel better after their first session. This is because words are powerful and the words we choose to tell our story can create our new reality! By telling your story you can choose whether you are the hero/heroine that has persevered despite many obstacles, or whether you are the victim. Talk to a friend share your story and create the truth you want!
- Practice mindfulness! Therapists love to talk about mindfulness. The reason is because it is so beneficial. Achieving mindfulness is focusing your awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting your feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations. The most common practice is meditation but there are so many other ways to practice mindfulness. Try doing a quiet session of yoga, go on a walk and be aware of your surroundings, pray, knit, or practice adult coloring! The options are limitless My favorite method is going on a run where I become aware of my thoughts, bodily sensations and surroundings. Find what works for you!
